You are probably thinking why I devoted a separate article to such a simple matter. You may be right, but if I say that there are at least 4 ways to extinguish a candle and some of them are correct and some can be dangerous. Interested? Let’s take a look at each of these methods.
Blow out the candle. This is the easiest and probably the most dangerous way. You will ask: “Why?” I will explain. When you blow on a candle, it leans very low over it and as the candle goes out, you inhale the smoke and carbon dioxide that is produced as the candle goes out. In addition, if the flame is very large and you blow on it, there is a high probability that sparks from the flame will spread to flammable things that may be near the candle (paper, curtains). Therefore, it is important not to place candles near flammable objects.
Cover the candle with a lid. At first glance, this is the right way, because in this way you will limit the access of oxygen to the flame and it will die out. However, it is necessary to pay attention to several points. First, the material which the cover is made of: paper, plastic, glass, metal. Paper will catch fire, plastic will melt, glass may crack, metal will heat up. Second, if you cover the candle with a lid, smoke and carbon dioxide will accumulate under it, which will settle on the wax and degrade the quality of the scent and the candle in general.
Cover the flame with a candle bell. This option is one of the best, safe and effective. The candle bell should be covered onto the burning wick to limit the access of oxygen to the flame. Hold it for a few seconds until smoke comes out from under the bell. The candle bell should be covered quite low above the burning wick, but not to the level of the melted wax. That way, you won’t contaminate the candle bell with wax, and the smoke will have a place to escape so that it doesn’t settle on the wax. In this way, the scent will remain pure. You might say that in this case there is also smoke and carbon dioxide. Yes, it’s true. However, you don’t lean too close to the flame and inhale the smoke and carbon dioxide.
Pour the flame with melted wax. This is another one of the best options. For this, you need to have a candle spoon. With its help, you will collect melted wax from the candle and pour it over the burning wick. It is important that you get enough wax to cover the entire wick, then it will definitely die down. If you pour wax over only part of the wick, the second part will continue to burn. By pouring the wick with wax, you will extinguish the candle quickly and efficiently, while producing the least amount of smoke and carbon dioxide.
